Being in charge.
When things run smoothly and people obey orders unquestioningly.
Good soldiers in his command.
A fine weapon in his hand.

The way a violin fits under his chin, though not many people know about that.

Dislikes:
Insubordination.
He'd say "not having a weapon on hand", but that would never happen. Ever.

Strengths:

He'd be in good physical condition for just about anybody, but for his age, it's damn good condition.
Has an inherant bullshit detector.
As he discovered in Vietnam, he has a rather large tolerance for torture before he breaks. Something to ponder: if you're following the rules established at the Hanoi Hilton for how to deal with torture and broadcasting propoganda, are you still breaking? Society says one thing. Douglas' own conscience says another.
Weaknesses:
Doesn't have the best relationship with his family.
Sucks at the touchy-feely kumbaya crap.
Impatient when people don't just shut up, listen, and then nut up.

At least three important events in your character's life and why it matters.

On his 18th birthday, Douglas joined up with the Army. He figured it was only a matter of time before he was drafted, and this way, he got to control his fate at least a little. It wasn't long before he fell in love with the military, even if there were things he didn't like. Before shipping out to Vietnam, he met Anne Bradley and before the summer was over, the two were wed.
Douglas was only 19 when Anne informed him he was going to be a father. His world dropped out from under him and then reformed under his feet. He had never been happier and more terrified in his life. When Derek was born, that emotion intensified. With each child that was born, he still felt that terror and happiness. When James and Alexandra was born, he realized that the terror he'd felt before was nothing compared to having a baby girl.
Douglas and Anne only had seventeen years together before cancer took her. Douglas was ill-prepared to be the sole parent to six kids, ranging from five to fifteen. When Anne died, the light and laughter in the house died, too. Douglas withdrew from his family, not knowing how to cope with the death of his wife. Some people, when faced with a loss that large, don't know how to do anything but shut down. Douglas didn't consider himself a weak man, but that didn't stop him from shutting down as much as possible. Work was non-negotiable, and family, unfortunately, fell by the wayside as he promised himself tomorrow. Eventually, tomorrows run out and your family stops forgiving you for not being around.
Alexandra and James, the babies of the family, were the most affected by having only Douglas as a parent, because the others at least remembered Anne and her ways. For Alexandra and James, the memories were hazy at best. Things came to a head after their high school graduation, when he was unable to show up because he was working out the funeral arrangements of his oldest son, Derrek. Unfortunately, it was the last straw in a long line of straws too heavy for the camel, and James and Alexandra joined the Marines in a moment of spite. Words were exchanged that neither side could take back, and that was the last time he spoke to his two youngest children.
After decades of working his ass off, Douglas found himself transferred to the same top secret base that he'd managed to pull strings to get Alexandra and James transferred to. He was looking forward, with no small amount of trepidation, to reconnecting with them.

What does your character not like about themselves? At least three things.

He has treated his family like soldiers ever since his wife died. He knows that he does it, but doesn't know how to stop. A good soldier is able to adapt. He is a good soldier, and he should be able to adapt in this way.
Workaholic. When Anne died, he threw himself into work, and now he doesn't know how to stop.
He's getting older in a young man's game. Years of guns are amounting their toll on him, and the hearing loss is starting to affect his violin playing. Violin is one of his few ways to unwind.
