Once he was sure Crichton was keeping an eye out for any hostiles too, Dan took the time to shed his pack and expand the rifle section to its longest capacity, then began compacting his M24A3. First, he unscrewed the suppressor and dropped it into the rifle pocket, then folded the AICS stock down, engaged the safety and pushed the rifle in after the suppressor. With that done, he zipped the compartment closed over the rifle and began swapping out the M24 magazines on his LBE for his PDW magazines.

With the small ceremony complete, Dan re-rucked the bag and adjusted the straps to account for the change in weight. He took a few paces to make sure the load was balanced and then returned to scanning the trees for anything that looked remotely Jaffa- or Goa'uld-like. Or any hostile natives. Really, anything man-shaped. He made sure his right hand was free to reach for his rifle, though. Hands had a tendency to clench when on an adrenaline rush, and he didn't want to clamp down on his binoculars with both paws.

"Should probably get moving to somewhere sheltered where we'll have better visibility," Dan stated, again, to no one in particular, then turned abruptly towards the group and addressed the local, "Mouse, do you know anywhere we can take shelter and see anyone coming?"

Mouse looked back and forth between the people talking to her, cringing away from them. Her entire goal-set was to go unnoticed by people, and there were entirely too many people focused on her right now. To be fair, one person focusing on her was too many, so there you go.

Mouse was not a talker. Mouse was very emphatically not a talker. If she wasn't careful, she had a tendency to stutter or stammer. Honestly, it was a minor miracle she'd been able to talk as much as she had earlier.

So Mouse didn't even try to talk. She was in good shape to not be cringing backwards, even if she was looking at them with wide eyes of terror.

She simply made a "follow me" gesture, and took off running. She wasn't particularly fast, so the impostor-not-gods shouldn't have had any trouble keeping up with her, not even the one that fell. Mouse tended to stay in trees, just because she felt safer up in them than anywhere else, but she did know about a cave that sounded ideal for what the group of impostor-not-gods wanted.

The trees gave way to a cliff face, which Mouse threw herself at, scrambling up it and into the cave about halfway up. Once inside, she poked her head out and watched the impostor-not-gods.

Climbing...jofe!

Sarah rolled her eyes but hoisted herself onto the rock face. Her arms burned she was so out of practice and she dared not look down. Heights and her hadn't gotten along since she was twelve and her father had dropped her off the roof of their villa. She'd learned to deal with the fear since then, but it still formed a knot in her gut.

She pulled with her arms mostly since her leg was now in full protest. Running she could do, exercises she could do, even fighting to a point--enough to pass the fitness exam for this mission. Climbing hadn't been on the test.

It wasn't that she was out of shape--she was in peak physical condition--it was that her leg was still recovering form the damage inflicted upon it. By the time she got to the ledge she shook with pain and exhaustion, pulling herself up belly scratching along the dirt floor of the cave until she was far enough up to roll onto her back with a grunt.

This was a bad idea, a very bad idea and she had a feeling she was going to get hell for it soon.

She forced herself up, took a swig of her water, and handed the canteen to their native friend if she needed some. The pain could probably be read on her face, but she worked hard to cover it as her team mates would soon be joining them. Pain she could handle, it was the reducing mobility that made her want to curse. Maybe she had twisted it in the initial retreat from the gate?

"It's water. Don't be afraid. Now--what the others said is true--we're not gods, me least of all--but what I said is also true. I don't fear this god of yours."

She took out a bottle and ate two pills of motrin the base doctor had given her before the mission. That should quiet things down a bit.

"We fight the false-gods wherever we find them--and they are the false ones, they prey on people's beliefs and enslave them."

Sarah sighed and leaned back against the stone, taking her boot off to inspect, rolling her eyes at the shades of purple forming under her sock.

"And you probably don't understand or don't care about that, do you?"

Shaking fingers undid the slipping tie around her hair and released the long strands, combing through them while she waited.

"Of all the damn days to go heavy," Dan grunted as they reached the cliff face.

Goats would have been able to run right up there, but bipeds had a more awkward time. He hauled himself up, hand over hand, foot over foot until he reached the cave with the others. As he attached his Aimpoint's night vision device and checked it was working, Dan noticed that Yadin had removed her boot. And that her ankle was discoloured.

"Yadin!" he roared, forgetting that no, he was not dealing with a patrol made up of hardened SAS operators, "Get some compression on that damn ankle before I compress it for you! It's not going back in the boot as it is now."

Dan used an exasperated growl as the tirade's exclamation mark and dropped into a sitting position with the loud end of his PDW angled towards the mouth of the cave. He reached into one of the many, many pockets on his trousers and produced a "king sized" Hershey's bar, tearing open the wrapper and breaking off a row of the chocolate rectangles. Chocolate was good survival food. Easily-digested, high in sugars, fats and protein. And frankly, he needed the morale boost of some damn chocolate.

Once he'd had enough of sitting against the wall, looking vaguely menacing and volatile, he remembered his manners and offered the bar across the cave to the native.

"It's good," Dan stated bluntly.

If running for the entrance wouldn't have ended in tumbling death, she might have rocketed for the exit at the boom of his voice. Instead she shrank against the cave wall, ace bandage already out of her pack, and averted her eyes.

Her heart pumped wildly in her ears and her breath came in shallow gasps that threatened to make her hyperventilate.

Sarah's free hand wrapped around the knife she had concealed at her back, instinct driving her for a split second before reality set in.

She took a few cleansing deep breaths and muttered, fixing the wrap in place. Focusing on anger allowed her to function at least.

Post by Eric Crichton Sat Sep 15, 2012 4:27 pm

Eric cracked a slight grin at the unfolding events, he had not gotten much of a chance to get to know Dan but he liked him.

"Don't take it personally Yadin, the Colonel is just looking out for you."

Taking a few swigs of water from the CamelBak tube, Crichton pulled out a flashlight and scanned the cave they were in.

Taking note of the undisturbed dirt floor of the cave the Commander turned back to the others, "Its been a while since someone has been through these caves, tracks are old in here."

He bent down and examined the tracks in more detail, "Not Jaffa tracks either. Maybe hand crafted sandals of sorts. Probably the local population."

Eric shot back up and made his way back to the others, "I doubt the Jaffa know about this cave, should be safe to hold up for a rest."

He lingeringly walked towards their new friend.

"How much further to...wherever we are going Mouse?"

When the yell came, Mouse just pressed herself up against the wall of the cave, doing her best to go invisible and unnoticed. That was what she always tried to do when people around her got mad.

That small hope was dashed when Eric turned to her and asked how much farther until where she was taking them.

Mouse blinked a few times. "Where do you want to go? The cave is safe; no one will look here. The village people aren't good trackers. All the good trackers are from elsewhere. Where do you want to go?"

Sarah finished wrapping her foot and glared back at the Commander. She hadn't missed the jumpiness of their friend, or how it mirrored how she felt on the inside. Sarah shoved it down, bottled it up, forced herself to stay level--but on the inside she was curled in a weeping ball.

She hissed as she jammed the wrapped limb back into her boot and laced it tight. It barely fit, but she'd manage. Why did she have to be the weak link? She was normally the strong one, the protector--after what they'd done though... She was still discovering the ways in which they'd broken her.

Sarah felt like a shattered mirror. Some pieces still fit together close enough that the image was undistorted, while others were still sharp and jagged, mismatched and splintered so the image came back in pieces.

She limped over to Mouse and the commander, sitting down again with a heavy sigh as far from Crichton as possible, shoulders tense enough to bounce bullets off of.

"The cave seems defensible enough, and it won't be easily found. We could stay here? Use this as a base of operations to plan our next move. We'll need more information to get back to the Gate. You'll need someone to infiltrate the locals--someone like me."

She was a spy. It was what spies did. She wasn't trying to be the hero or anything. It was a simple matter of who was best trained for infiltration and evasion--and that was her, with the help of Mouse.

There were times when she regretted her choices in life.

"Assuming we're able to melt into the crowd, your training's going to be ideal, Yadin," Dan rumbled, shifting from his sitting position to sitting on his haunches, "If that's no longer a possibility, thanks to the other new arrivals... we're going to need to be a little less conventional. This place is, unfortunately, going to turn into a warzone if the worst comes to pass."

Dan made sure his PDW's safety was engaged before letting it hang limp in its sling, then turned his attention back to the local scout, "What's the situation on the ground? Are these the first false gods to show up and talk to your people? And if not, when did they last visit?"

Mission: Mousetrap (Invite) - Page 2 Empty Re: Mission: Mousetrap (Invite)

Post by Richard Hale Thu Oct 11, 2012 11:17 pm

Richard awoke that morning, his back aching from the day before. He had been undercover now for 3 and a half weeks and the work was beginning to take its toll. Richard had been sent undercover as a slave in Lord Yu’s workforce in order to gain intelligence on the resistance against Lord Yu, his strengths, planets he occupied and to perform damage reports after attacks had occurred on Lord Yu. Being a slave made this job particularly simple as the slaves were used to rebuild after attacks and to build up defenses for the armies thus providing the SGC a perfect conduit for this information. The Gao’uld often ferried the slaves from planet to planet depending on their needs and Richard had been to at least seven planets since going undercover.

The complicated part of the mission was getting the information back to the SGC undetected. As slaves, each were allowed one bag to keep their personal belongings. After checking the bag the first time, the jaffa could care less about it as the slaves posed no real threat to Lord Yu. The vast majority of slaves viewed the Gau’old as gods and would never defy them. They also could better use their manning to fight the wars instead of micromanaging the slaves. As long as they broke their backs working and doing what they said, that’s all that mattered in their eyes. Many of the slaves bags contained memories of home and family, keeping their morale and hope higher which kept the slaves working hard each day.

In Richards bag he smuggled a communication device (described below), small PDA with naquida batteries, 3 sticks of C-4, 10 meters of demo cord, fuses, a pistol (Colt 911a) and 3 magazines of ammunition for the pistol along with a sensor that was able to detect the unique energy signal that a gate opening produced. When it detected the presence of an open gate it sent the recorded signal through the gate. The SGC had planted several hidden arrays on Lord Yu’s planets to communicate with the dozen or so undercover operatives it had on various planets of Lord Yu. These arrays worked much like a fax machine. When a gate opened, the arrays and communication devices sent a signal to the other side, determining if there was a device on the other side that could receive the signal, be it the array or communication device. If it connected, the data stream was sent. Once a day the SGC would dial the planets where the arrays were placed, sending messages and receiving them from their operatives. Surely it wasn’t a fast way to get information back and forth however it was an effective way nonetheless and gave the SGC vital information on Lord Yu.
Richard rolled over, grabbing his PDA from the bag and powering it up. Checking through the data he noticed that the gate had opened and that the data was sent directly through to the SGC, meaning the SGC had dialed the planet he was on. Richard has minutes to get prepared for the arduous day ahead and used this time to broadcast a message on the SGC radio channel in case anyone had come through the gate.

“SGC forces – this is Harlequin – please be aware that agents are on the ground on this planet. If contact must be made respond either immediately or in 17 hours. Harlequin out”

This message was the standard protocol of the SGC. It ensured that if any SGC teams were present, they would be aware of an agent on the ground in order to minimize any harm to the undercover agent while allowing the agent to remain undercover.

With that, Richard hurriedly got ready for another day of slave laboring.

______________________________________

It didn’t really bother Jonathan that Crichton didn’t give him any orders. He was used to operating without orders so he decided to move to the rear of the group and take up the ‘six’ position. He left his right hand on the grip of the M16, with the muzzle pointing down as he clipped the chest strap together. He waited patiently until the final chevron was in place and the ‘puddle of water’ jumped at them. On the outside he kept a calm exterior but on the inside he couldn’t believe his eyes. He was never one to believe in aliens, even after his ‘encounter’ in Iran, but now he was starting to believe. He quickly brought his M16 up to his shoulder, aiming down the reflex sight, as he and everyone else converged into the puddle. Once everyone was through, he took a breath and stepped through barrel first.

Once through, he moved towards his desired spot in front of the gate before kneeling and scanning the area in front of him with his barrel. Once there, he moved his ENVG over his right eye and switched it on. The sound of the jet-thing flying overhead made him bring his rifle up. He decided that seeing as this was his first outing onto alien planets, he would keep his mouth shut and listen to the officers. After all, he was just a sergeant. When the call to hit the tree line came from the SEAL, he did just that. He was the first one to the tree line and when he got there, he went prone instinctively to watch the gate encase one of the aliens decided to open fire on them. At first he didn’t notice the female fall from the tree and approached the group. He would either give himself hell for it later, or the Brit would. Either way he would catch hell for it.

When the girl approached and told them to follow her if they wanted to live, he nearly laughed. He didn’t trust the girl that had jumped out of a tree to lead the group to safety just in time. Of course not many people could trust someone who could jump out of a perfectly good airplane with a parachute. Once Dan spoke about being a soldier and not a god, Jonathan nodded his agreement but still refrained from speaking. He didn’t voice his concerns as to how trusting they should be to civilians they encounter on their excursions into hostile alien worlds, but he did shake his head and spit a little. If anyone asked he would say “Dirt.” When he saw that there was a cliff to be climbed, he nearly said an expletive before beginning the climb. Using one hand to help himself up the cliff and another to keep his M16 from getting in the away, he was the last one to make it up the cliff.

He got to the top just in time to see the swollen ankle and the Brit yelling at Israeli to put compression on it. He couldn’t agree more. Swelling would be bad for long hikes and reduced mobility of foot causing pain. He move further into the cave before kneeling down and removing his Gunslinger pack off of his back. He took another slightly closer look at the ankle before speaking.

“It’s a mild sprain. If it was broken, I doubt you would be walking on it unassisted. Same goes for a severe sprain. Keep it compressed until we make it back to base.”

He then proceeded to remove his M110 from the pack before placing his M16 in it. He also removed the suppressor and the night sight. The first thing he did was attach the night site in front of the scope and slid the shroud cover over both. He then moved to the mouth of the cave as he screwing the suppressor on. As he went prone and looked through the scope, their radios received activity from someone on the planet called Harlequin. Harlequin? Did SGC have an undercover unit on the planet? That made things difficult. If a firefight erupted they would have to be even more careful so as to not hit a friendly.

“Sir, if I may. I know I’m the new guy and all but if all the civilians are Asian looking wouldn’t it be dangerous to throw a middle easterner into the mix. I don’t know about you but I can certainly tell the difference. Oh, and I have eyes on the ground.”

“SGC forces – this is Harlequin – please be aware that agents are on the ground on this planet. If contact must be made respond either immediately or in 17 hours. Harlequin out”

Harlequin? That must have been Lord Yu's mothership and not just some minor Goa'uld of his.

"Harlequin, SG-1. We are stuck on the planet now that Lord Yu's forces are here. Please advise on force numbers and movement. So far we count two Jaffa squads protecting the gate."

Crichton knew it may take a moment for Harlequin to respond and moved over to the opening of the cave, taking a swig of water from his CamelBak.

The Marine Sergeant chimed in.

“Sir, if I may. I know I’m the new guy and all but if all the civilians are Asian looking wouldn’t it be dangerous to throw a middle easterner into the mix. I don’t know about you but I can certainly tell the difference. Oh, and I have eyes on the ground.”

Turning the flow valve off on his CamelBak the Commander nodded.

"True Sergeant, however all of us would stick out like a sore thumb as none of us are Asian."

His eyes shifted to Mouse then Sarah then slowly moved over to Yadin and squatted down near her.

"Look, I noticed that you seem to have a problem with me. I don't know what that problem is but you need to stowe it while we are on this mission. We need to have each others back to get out of here alive. Okay?"

He looked into her eyes and gave a slight nod.

"Now I have noticed that Mouse seems to only trust you right now. I need you to find out from her if there are any other people on this planet that look like us. Not Asian like herself. Got it?"

The radio crackled to life just as Richard was leaving his quarters

"Harlequin, SG-1. We are stuck on the planet now that Lord Yu's forces are here. Please advise on force numbers and movement. So far we count two Jaffa squads protecting the gate."

Quickly grabbing the radio, Richard responded

[i]"SG-1 - good to hear from you. So far I have positively determined 5 jaffa squads to be present, 1 of which that is dedicated to slave control leaving 4 for guard duty. I only arrived here yesterday however so there may be more forces present. I estimate the slave population at or around 200-300 in number."

There was entirely too much testosterone in that cave for her liking. She thought maybe the 'stay the f-away from me' vibes that were rolling off her skin would be enough to keep them at bay. She guessed wrong.

She barely suppressed the snarky comment when the sergeant said her ankle was just a sprain. He had no knowledge of the pain she could handle. She was glad he didn't try to touch her--or she'd have to explain her reasoning for kicking him across the cave. As for the commander, she couldn't just ignore him, so she did her best to remain civil.

"No problem with you, sir." She added a mumbled "just your gender" in Hebrew.

His orders were clear, and they gave her something to do which would help her tamp down the claustrophobic feeling that was currently crawling like ants under her skin. She moved slowly over to their guest and joined her.

"Thank you for helping us, Mouse." Sometimes the most direct approach was the best. "Can you tell me a little about where you live? What are the people like? Do they all resemble you, or do some of them look like us? Are they good people, like you? Would they hand us over to the false-gods?"

She kept her voice curious and nonthreatening. Her hands remained visible with her palms open so the other woman had no need to fear her.

A part of her considered asking how she got that scar, but then she decided against it. She wouldn't appreciate someone asking about her scars--though they were hidden--so she expected Mouse wouldn't appreciate it either. She assumed though by the clean swipe that it was a blade that did it--meaning Mouse had at least one enemy--presuming of course Mouse hadn't killed that enemy.

Sarah stopped thinking ahead and focused for the woman's response.

Mouse shook her head quickly, not caring that hair fell in her face, obscuring her view. "You can't trust them! Everyone fears the false gods!" Once that message was imparted, she forced herself to slow down and process what else had been said. "They all look like me. Not like you. Some are good people. But you can't trust. Some are not good. Slavers will try to capture or kill you. Masters will just hurt you. You can't trust."

((Did anyone else forget that Sandy is supposed to actually be here? Yeah, me, too.))

Sandy didn't really have a lot to say that wasn't already being covered. So she wasn't really going to say things just to be another voice. There was a time and a place for that kind of thing, and while on a mission? Really wasn't the place for it.

She was, however, observing. She'd spent the run for the cliff trying to commit each step to memory, so that she could get her team back to the Gate without help, if it became necessary to do so. Their native guide seemed like she genuinely wanted to help, but you always prepared for other eventualities, just in case.

Sometimes, it seemed like Sandy's whole life was a contingency plan for those "just in case" things. And you know what? She was okay with that. It meant she was prepared for a shittonne of things that other people weren't.

The diminutive redhead hung in the background, watching everyone, ready to weigh her opinion in if it became necessary.

Wonderful. Trust no one. She could work with that and even though her looks were different than Mouse's--they weren't that different. They already had a spy with the Snakes it seemed, and the Snakes would bring in a diverse population.

Talking with Mouse helped her anxiety, oddly enough hearing of traders and slavers--but she still felt like she had to get out of the cave.

"Mouse, I don't mean to interupt you, but is there somewhere safe we can go, away from here, to talk? We're going to need the freedom to enter populations--which means you're going to need to get cleaned up and I honestly could use a dip myself."

She looked from man to man unable to repress her shudder.

"I feel like the walls are going to fall in." She added with a whisper and pleading eyes.

Mouse nodded, taking Sarah by the hand and leading her out of the cave. She was familiar with the area, having spent weeks in the woods around the village, learning all the possible routes in and out.

So Mouse was well aware of the little river nearby. She wasn't much of a swimmer, by which she meant she wasn't a swimmer at all, but as long as the water wasn't moving too quickly (which it hadn't been yet), she should manage.

She didn't ask she just followed Mouse back down the wall and if the commander or the others had a problem then that was really too bad for them. She was used to being an independent thinker in charge of her own team doing things her own way. She knew how to respond to orders, and she was. She was going with Mouse to talk about what she needed to know about the local population.

Sarah followed until she could hear moving water. She kept herself low to the ground and wary. She had no desire to find herself mixed in with these traders. Finally, the duo stopped in front of the most lovely grotto she had ever seen. A small fall dipped down into a shallow pool from which the tiny river probably flowed from.

"Yofe." She breathed. It was beautiful.

She took another look around, this time tactically--looking for all the security risks the site posed and found few. They were still mostly visible from the mouth of the cave, which she wasn't thrilled about, but if they kept to the pool they should be safe from prying eyes.

She led by example, dropping the back pack off her shoulders and removing her belt. Her ankle felt better and there was no one here to bawl her out for taking the boot off again, so she sat down and worked the boots off along with her socks.

Mouse turned her back to the other woman, slipping out of her own clothes and folding them neatly on a rock before entering the pool. This little spot had been her favourite discovery so far, without contest. Mouse liked water, even if she didn't really know how to swim, and saw it as a way to wipe the slate clean in a lot of ways. No matter how she felt before going into water, she always felt better afterwards.

And it was really nice to only be dealing with one person. Mouse would say that she had trust issues as far as men went, but the truth was, she just had trust issues in general. More men had treated her badly than women, but it bad treatment wasn't limited by gender.

Mouse felt the sand and rocks between her toes and the cool water on her skin and submerged herself under the water.

Sarah pulled her shirt over her head but left her underthings on. For some reason, probably because it would never be seen by another mortal soul, she still wore lace. She also left the garter that held a very deadly looking blade to the inside of her thigh. One could never be too careful and whether it was intruders or alien fish, she wasn't taking any chances.

Mouse kept to herself for the most part, and she was okay with that. She didn't seem to be as much of a swimmer as Sarah was. As soon as her body hit the refreshing water a weight seemed to lift off her shoulders. She swam out to the point under the grotto fall where the water was a dark cerulean blue and at its deepest before submerging and swimming down as far as she could go. Unfortunately, the pool wasn't as deep as she first thought and she was barely straining for air before her fingers grabbed at the sandy bottom. She pushed herself back up and breached through to the surface with a sputter. Then she swam back to where she left her bathing things. Sarah washed quickly and looked for Mouse who looked like she'd never even heard of soap.

She approached the other woman slowly, not wanting to intrude and not showing her body above the water.

She wasn't too eager for others to see her marred flesh, but she had to reveal some of herself to reach the other woman's hair. With soap running down her wrists she finally just decided that it didn't matter right now, and stood--the water rushing off her lithe form. Mouse had scars too, some more visible than others. It took every bit of control not to touch the woman's back. The almost intricate lattice of scars mirrored her own.

So she wasn't the only one to know a whip.

Mouse was alerted to Sarah's presence behind her by a combination of movement of the water, sound, that kind of thing, but mostly, it was just a feeling she had.

She turned slowly, unsure as to why Sarah would be as close as she was. Mouse's eyes were drawn to the angry scars on her chest, and the air left her body in a whoosh.

Oh.

People who carry those kind of scars recognize when someone else does, even if they can't see them. This was why Mouse had felt more at ease with Sarah than the others.

Mouse hesitantly reached towards Sarah, careful fingers gently tracing the scars.

Sarah's breath hitched in her throat and the soap strained through her fingers. She couldn't move at first, unused to anyone's touch. Even doctors had a hard time pinning her down, but this was different.

Mouse's fingertips trailed over the large knife wound that cut through her right breast and ended near her navel. Hassan had given her that for her final escape attempt, not long before the soldiers had come for her. The infection had almost killed her though, and had made a silicone implant necessary if she wanted to at least appear normal on the outside.

Sarah stepped closer to Mouse, raising tentative fingers to trace the scar left on her cheek before trailing over her shoulders and pushing away her obsidian hair.

These wounds were recent enough that Sarah would be breaking out the med kit to make sure their little dip didn't cause infection. They weren't open, but they weren't scared over either.

She knew now why there was a connection between them. It broke her heart to know another had suffered like her--and she assumed for much longer than she had. Sarah's abuse had been life long, but it was only as a captive of Iran that things had reached their climax.

She swallowed hard and moved to grab the soap, re-washing her own hair so that Mouse could see what it was before she attempted to wash her companion's hair.

Mouse swallowed hard. She'd only gotten away from the Slavers a few weeks previous. The cuts they'd left on her were in the process of healing. Her chest and stomach was a mess of patterns carved into her flesh, while her arms had notches for each time she'd been used.

There were a lot of notches.

But Mouse had kept an eye on all her cuts, and she knew they weren't infected. She'd had to deal with enough infected cuts and burns to know what to look for.

Muscles seemed to tense against her wish, and she did her best to hold still as Sarah's finger traced scars. Sarah wasn't going to hurt her, but her flight response was doing it's best to kick in.

Limbs shook slightly as Sarah pulled away to soap up her hair, and Mouse got the message. This was what Sarah wanted to do to Mouse's hair.

Mouse took the bar of soap from the taller woman and began soaping up her hair, trying to create a lather. It had been a long time since Mouse had washed her hair, though, and the dirt and sweat and... various other things... had built up.

Despite the revelation, Sarah found a light laugh flutter at the back of her throat when Mouse tried to mimic her with the bar of soap. She finished rinsing her hair and then took the bar in her hand with Mouse, tracing it over the woman's skin instead. It was bar soap--her hair was already too tangled for anything other than conditioner to break through.

Sarah's soapy hands slid over Mouse's skin, her fingers stiffening at the change in texture between smooth unbroken skin and rough scar tissue. If she were blind Mouse's back would have been a braile tablet of her suffering. So would Sarah's.

She bit her lip to keep the memories at bay. There were times though, at night--every night--when she could still feel Hassan, still feel his blade sink into her flesh to cause the pain he needed to get his pleasure.

She shuddered, maybe from cold where the air dried her moistened skin--probably not.

Sarah refocused, filling her hands with the hair product and reaching out to massage it into Mouse's scalp.

"Shhh, yefe shelli--I won't hurt you." Her uncle had called her that--beautiful little girl--seemed so long ago. She wasn't sure why she used it now with Mouse.
